Karuna: Celebrate Life!
Becoming a Volunteer at Karuna

Volunteers are at the heart of Karuna's community.  They are actively engaged in everything from conducting tours and scheduling events to conducting support groups and classes.

Being a Friend of Karuna comes with some perks, not the least of which is knowing that you are part of a fun-loving, creative bunch of avatars who aren't afraid to "Woot!" "LOL," and "YeeeeHaaaaa" when the spirit moves us.  In addition, however, you will have the chance to learn and experience unique perspectives as our eclectic, multi-cultural community grows and expresses itself in a whole host of unique ways.  Interested? Here are some ways you can volunteer as a Friend of Karuna:

Hang Out:  That's right, we can use people to just come and "be" on Karuna to help folks who land and don't know what to do or see on the island.  We also need folks to be our eyes and ears to report problems, suggest ways we could do things better, and answer the many and frequent questions of noobs.

Conduct Tours:  All Friends of Karuna are shown how to conduct tours of the island, which has a wealth of beautiful and intriguing places to be explored.

Be a Press Hound: Help Karuna promote itself to groups and individuals in real life and encourage not only media attention but active participation inworld.

Be an Art Sleuth: Karuna hosts an ever changing and eclectic mix of art exhibits, and we are always looking for the names of artists to feature.  Your job, should you agree to accept it, would be to find great art, take a pic or two and send both the name of the artist and the pics in a notecard to us.  Fun stuff ;-)

Be a Storyteller:  Volunteer to read your favorite stories at one of our weekly storytelling events, or better yet, share stories of your own.

Teach Classes: Karuna offers a variety of ways for those dealing with HIV/AIDS to tell their stories, and we are always looking for Friends who are willing to share their knowledge and skills as writers, builders, musicians, photographers, and videographers.

Organize Events: Karuna hosts a wide range of events - everything from speakers and music concerts to Story Quests and art gallery openings.  We are always

Be a Writer and/or Editor:  Karuna publishes a monthly newsletter and makes the stories and poems that are donated on the island available both on the Story Wall and on the Web site as part of our ongoing outreach efforts.  We can always use writers and editors to help with this.

Be an Artist: Karuna is always looking for new art to be displayed and featured on our grounds.  As an artist you would also be featured in our newsletter and Web site.

We Are Especially Looking for the Following

1. Event Coordinator: Help Karuna's Project Coordinator schedule and conduct events such as speaker series, HIV/AIDS Day events, music and voice performances, etc.

2. Art Curator: Help collect and display the rotating displays of sculptures, photos, and interactive displays that decorate Karuna's gardens.

3. Calendar Keeper: Enter events when they are sent to you, not only those on Karuna, but from other health and HIV/AIDS related sims os that we can cross promote and not have conflicting schedules.

4. Volunteer Coordinator: Act as the liason between volunteers and the Project coordinators, keep an updated list of volunteers that includes when they can work and what they would like to do. Help us figure out ways to show how much we appreciate our volunteers :-)

5. Tour Guide Instructor: Train new volunteers how to give tours
